AmaTuks win to make PSL play-offs

Johannesburg - The University of Pretoria beat Golden Arrows 2-1 in their must win Premiership encounter at Tuks Stadium on the final day of the season on Saturday, securing a top-flight lifeline in the process.

The result, coupled by Jomo Cosmos losing to Maritzburg United, means that Tuks survive and Ezenkosi are condemned to relegation.

Vuyisile Nthombayithethi and Getaneh Kebede were on target as Tuks climbed from 16th to 15th on a drama-filled final day.

Shaun Bartlett's side needed nothing less than a victory heading into the final game of the campaign after they drew 2-2 with Polokwane City and Maritzburg United bagged all three points against Ajax Cape Town in the penultimate round of fixtures.

And they broke the deadlock a minute before the half-hour mark. Nthombayithethi headed home a Kebede set piece. Three minutes before the break the team from Pretoria doubled their advantage.

Once again a Kebede free-kick caused problems in the Arrows defence and the ball found its way into the back of the net to hand the home team a two-goal advantage heading into the interval.

Bartlett's team came out in the second half like a team on a mission as they controlled proceedings. Innocent Nemukondeni was a bright spark and in the 75th minute almost put his team three goals to the good but his shot was wide off the mark.

With ten minutes to go Nemukondeni was shown a second yellow card for simulation. In the last minute of the game, Arrows managed to pull a goal back through a headed effort from Gladwin Shitolo but Tuks held on for the victory.
