Suspected rapist in custody after taking hostages inside Baltimore Burger King; 7-year-old girl safe

Baltimore police nabbed an armed rape suspect who took hostages Sunday in a Baltimore Burger King, including a 7-year-old girl.

The standoff lasted about four hours until all hostages were released and the suspect was in custody, officials said.

“He made the decision to do the right thing and that was not harm anyone,” police spokesman T.J. Smith said.

The gunman, who has not been identified, is wanted in connection to a rape that happened within the last two days, police said.

Officers spotted the suspect driving Sunday around 11 a.m. and tried to pull him over, but he sped off.

After a short chase, the man crashed into another driver, then jumped out of his wrecked car with a gun in his hand and ran into the Burger King, police said. The other motorist was treated for minor injuries.

Around 2:30 p.m., several hours into the tense hostage situation, one of the three adults was released. A second adult hostage was released after that, police announced around 4 p.m.

All of the hostages, include the 7-year-old girl, were released at about 5 p.m.
