The latest on Friday's fatal shooting at Lackland AFB

SAN ANTONIO - Two people are dead after a shooting Friday morning at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland -- an incident that involved an airman shooting his squadron commander, a Pentagon official speaking on condition of anonymity said.

James Keith, spokesman for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, said it was a murder-suicide.

No arrests have been reported, but the situation is over and a lockdown was lifted around 10:15 a.m., Brig. Gen. Robert LaBrutta told reporters.

LaBrutta gave few details about the shooting, which was reported at 8:40 a.m. in Forbes Hall, a building with offices and classrooms. He declined to identify the dead and gave no details about any relationship between the two, what led to the gunfire, or what ended it.

Two "male victims" and two Glock guns were found in an office at Forbes Hall, LaBrutta said.

The shooting was "not a terrorism situation," he said.

After the shooting was reported to 911, security personnel evacuated Forbes Hall and initiated a lockdown of the base. They then searched the building for about an hour before lifting the lockdown and declaring the situation over.

Lackland is where the U.S. Air Force conducts its basic training for enlistees. Lackland is one of three major military facilities -- the others being Randolph Air Force Base and the U.S. Army's Fort Sam Houston -- that merged to form Joint Base San Antonio in 2010.

Firearms restricted on base; Unclear if gunman had authorization

A spokesman for Lackland said military-issued and personal firearms are heavily restricted on the base and that it's not clear whether a gunman was authorized to have a weapon.

The base's civilian spokesman, Dan Hawkins, said it's too early to determine whether the gunman in Friday's shooting was registered to have a weapon. Two guns were found in the room where the bodies were discovered.

Hawkins said weapons are used for training purposes and carried by base security personnel, but personal firearms cannot be freely carried on the base. He also said security officers must be notified if a personal weapon is being brought onto the installation and the firearm also must be registered, in addition to other requirements.

chools placed on lockdown

Several schools in the area around Lackland AFB were placed on lockdown after the shooting was reported, including Valley Hi Elementary across the street.

The situation made for some tense moments for parents, KSAT's Katrina Webber reports.

Friday's lockdowns at Northside ISD schools are just the latest in what district spokesman Pascual Gonzalez said is almost a daily occurrence, KSAT's Jessie Degollado reports.
