Sunday forecast: Freeze Watch, snow in the Smokies for the first day of spring

This may be the first day of spring, but winter still has its grip on our weather.

A Freeze Watch is in the forecast for Sunday as well as snow in the Smokies.

Snow accumulations are likely across the higher elevations of the far Eastern Tennessee mountains and mountains of southwest North Carolina, the National Weather Service office in Morristown said.

A Freeze Watch is in effect for most the region for tonight into early Monday morning.

Here is what is happening: An upper level storm system will move across the region during the day and into the evening. Numerous showers are expected across East Tennessee and southwest North Carolina.

Across the highest elevations, temperatures will be cold enough for snow showers, the Weather Service said.

The far Eastern tennessee mountains, especially the Smoky Mountains, have the greatest chance of snow accumulations, according to the Weather Service. Snow accumulations of up to 2 inches will be possible across the higher elevations of the Smokies, mainly at elevations above 3,500 feet.

Some of the higher peaks elsewhere in the Tennessee mountains and extreme southwest North Carolina mountains could get an inch of snow.

Colder air will continue to flow into the region tonight behind a departing upper level system. Freezing temperatures are possible across almost the entire forecast area Sunday night, especially over Southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee, the Weather Service said.
